NTBackup FAQ

What's happening with Server 2008?

You've probably heard - NTBackup has been discontinued and will not be included in Windows Server 2008. Microsoft have provided downloadable version of NTBackup that allows you to restore data, but not backup.

Instead, there is a new backup system in Windows Server 2008 based on block-level backup, also known as drive imaging.

We're pleased to announce that BackupAssist supports these new features and adds the same simplicity, scheduling, schemes and reporting to Windows Server 2008 Backup as we've done for NTBackup. BackupAssist also address numerous shortcomings and deficiencies of the in-built backup wizards.

What about tape drive support for Server 2008?

The in-built drive imaging features in Server 2008 do not work with tape drives.

But the good news is that at BackupAssist, we're currently developing a file-based backup engine that will support tape drives, and include AES-256 encryption and compression. Please see our development roadmap for an estimated release date.
